Friendship is undeniably essential to our lives, partly because we learn to give unconditional love and care for other people, and because our friends can help contour who we are as people to a certain extent.
This is what Charles Walter Wooten wants to tell us through his work of fiction, Letters From A Chinese Angel.
As a retired teacher having a Master’s degree from CU-Boulder, Charles had heard that when you go to China to teach English, you will come home a different person – and this was certainly his experience. “I remember my last day there when a Chinese official asked me what most impressed me about China. Without hesitation my reply was the people! The Chinese are wonderful people,” he says.
Upon returning home to the United States, he gradually formed in his mind and heart an idea for a book. He felt that it was a story that needed to be told. However, he procrastinated the writing of it. Finally, his friends told him that it’s never too late to become what you might have been – if not now, then when? Thus, the birth of his very first novel, Letters From A Chinese Angel.Many of the experiences described in the novel were things that happened to him as an English teacher in China. He became very much attached to his students and felt they would be friends forever. Even now, after some seventeen years, he still gets in touch with them. “One student has become a high school principal. Another has earned a master’s degree in Australia; and is now pursuing a doctorate in TESOL. One even named his son after me. I am really so very proud of them all,” he adds.
Aside from having a deep passion for writing, Charles also enjoys outdoor activities such as skiing, backpacking, and mountaineering. Consequently, Charles Walter Wooten is a man who feels very “blessed” in the experiences he has been privileged to have along life’s road, including family and friends.
